    'First Portal in a Storm': A Virtual Space for Transition Students

    The lives of millennial students are epitomised by ubiquitous information, merged technologies, blurred social-study-work boundaries, multitasking and hyperlinked online interactions (Oblinger & Oblinger, 2005). These characteristics have implications for the design of online spaces that aim to provide virtual access to course materials, administrative processes and support information, all of which is required by students to steer a course through the storm of their transition university experience. Previously we summarised the challenges facing first year students (Kift & Nelson, 2005) and investigated their current online engagement patterns, which revealed three issues for consideration when designing virtual spaces (Nelson, Kift & Harper, 2005). In this paper we continue our examination of students’ interactions with online spaces by considering the perceptions and use of technology by millennial students as well as projections for managing the virtual learning environments of the future.     Engaging new students in tertiary study, amidst the storm of their adjustment to university life, should harness conventional physical as well as new virtual spaces to ensure (as urged by McInnis 2003, p.9) learning opportunities are maximised inside and outside of the classroom. When ubiquitous information, merged technologies, blurred social-study-work boundaries, multitasking and hyperlinked online interactions epitomise generational routines (Oblinger & Oblinger, 2005); positive, rewarding interactions through virtual space "portals" may establish the mode and intensity of on- and off-campus student experience. Conventional modes of curriculum delivery and learning support that hinge on presentation of material according to (for example) scheduled topic sessions, contact times and administrative office hours, do not necessarily fully accommodate these new social realities (James, 2002, p.81), contemporary learning practices or transition-informed curriculum design (Kift, 2005). In this paper, quantitative data and rich qualitative information from internal and external surveys are triangulated to examine the patterns of online engagement for students at QUT. These patterns inform our ongoing project that seeks to tailor the delivery of curriculum mediated resources within a virtual space

    A comparison of direct methods for valuing environmental amenities: A case study of the White Mountain National Forest

    New Hampshire\u27s White Mountain National Forest is well known for its mountain scenery as well as its many recreational opportunities. Upcoming changes in the electric utility industry may work to change the average level of visibility in the White Mountain National Forest. While the contingent valuation method has been extensively used to value public goods (in instances such as the case above), some view the procedure with skepticism. As a result, alternative methods such as conjoint analysis have been receiving more attention. This dissertation presents the results of a face-to-face survey that attempted to directly compare conjoint analysis and contingent valuation techniques using the White Mountain National Forest as a case study area

    Electricity deregulation and the valuation of visibility loss in wilderness areas: A research note.

    Visibility in most wilderness areas in the northeastern United States has declined substantially since the 1970s. As noted by Hill et al. (2000), despite the 1977 Clean Air Act and subsequent amendments, human induced smog conditions are becoming increasingly worse. Average visibility in class I airsheds, such as the Great Gulf Wilderness in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, is now about one-third of natural conditions. A particular concern is that deregulation of electricity production could result in further degradation because consumers may switch to lower cost fossil fuel generation (Harper 2000). To the extent that this system reduces electricity costs, it may also affect firm location decisions (Halstead and Deller 1997). Yet, little is known about the extent to which consumers are likely to make tradeoffs between electric bills and reduced visibility in nearby wilderness areas. This applied research uses a contingent valuation approach in an empirical case study of consumers’ tradeoffs between cheaper electric bills and reduced visibility in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. We also examine some of the problems associated with uncertainty with this type of analysis; that is, how confident respondents are in their answers to the valuation questions. Finally, policy implications of decreased visibility due to electricity deregulation are discussed

    ePortfolios: Mediating the minefield of inherent risks and tensions

    The ePortfolio Project at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) exemplifies an innovative and flexible harnessing of current portfolio thinking and design that has achieved substantial buy-in across the institution with over 23000 active portfolios. Robust infrastructure support, curriculum integration and training have facilitated widespread take-up, while QUT’s early adoption of ePortfolio technology has enabled the concomitant development of a strong policy and systems approach to deal explicitly with legal and design responsibilities. In the light of that experience, this paper will highlight the risks and tensions inherent in ePortfolio policy, design and implementation. In many ways, both the strengths and weaknesses of ePortfolios lie in their ability to be accessed by a wider, less secure audience – either internally (e.g. other students and staff) or externally (e.g. potential employees and referees). How do we balance the obvious requirement to safeguard students from the potential for institutionally-facilitated cyber-harm and privacy breaches, with this generation’s instinctive personal and professional desires for reflections, private details, information and intellectual property to be available freely and with minimal restriction? How can we promote collaboration and freeform expression in the blog and wiki world but also manage the institutional risk that unauthorised use of student information and work so palpably carries with it? For ePortfolios to flourish and to develop and for students to remain engaged in current reflective processes, holistic guidelines and sensible boundaries are required to help safeguard personal details and journaling without overly restricting students’ emotional, collaborative and creative engagement with the ePortfolio experience.     Chronic activation of Toll-like receptor 2 induces an ichthyotic skin phenotype

    BACKGROUND: Ichthyosis defines a group of chronic conditions that manifest phenotypically as a thick layer of scales and often affects the entire skin. While the gene mutations that lead to ichthyosis are well documented, the actual signalling mechanisms that lead to scaling are poorly characterised, however recent publications suggest that there are common mechanisms active in ichthyotic tissue, and in analogous models of ichthyosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine common mechanisms of hyperkeratosis that may be easily targeted with small molecule inhibitors. METHODS: We combined gene expression analysis of gene-specific shRNA knockdowns in rat epidermal keratinocytes of two genes mutated in autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI), Transglutaminase 1 (TGM1) and arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase, 12R type (ALOX12B), and proteomic analysis of skin scale from ARCI patients.as well as RNAseq data from rat epidermal keratinocytes treated with the Toll-like receptor-2 agonist PAM3CSK. RESULTS: we identified a common activation of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 pathway. Exogenous TLR2 activation led to increased expression of important cornified envelope genes and in organotypic culture caused hyperkeratosis. Conversely, blockade of TLR2 signalling in ichthyosis patient keratinocytes and our shRNA models reduced the expression of keratin 1, a structural protein over-expressed in ichthyosis scale. A time-course of Tlr2 activation in rat epidermal keratinocytes revealed that although there was rapid initial activation of innate immune pathways, this was rapidly superseded by widespread up-regulation of epidermal differentiation related proteins. Both NFÎșÎČ phosphorylation and Gata3 up-regulation was associated with this switch and Gata3 overexpression was sufficient to increase Keratin 1 expression. CONCLUSION: Taken together, these data define a dual role for Toll-like receptor 2 activation during epidermal barrier repair, that may be a useful therapeutic modality in treating diseases of epidermal barrier dysfunction

    Perceptions of Licensure: A Survey of Michigan Genetic Counselors

    This study by the Michigan Genetic Counselor Licensure Committee is the first known published documentation of genetic counselors’ beliefs and attitudes about licensure. The response rate from genetic counselors in Michigan was 66% (41/62). Ninety‐five percent of respondents were supportive of licensure. Respondents believed licensure would legitimize genetic counseling as a distinct allied healthcare profession (97.5%), increase the public’s protection (75%), and allow genetic counselors to practice independently (67%). While 45% felt licensure would increase counselor involvement in lawsuits, this did not impact licensure support (p = 0.744). Opinions were split regarding physician supervision and ordering tests. Even though 28% favored physician supervision, there was overwhelming support for genetic counselors performing some components of genetic testing (95%) and ordering some types of genetic tests (82%) independent of a physician.
